About RootCalcs
The Problem We're Solving
Every garden planning guide tells you to "estimate" how much soil you need. Estimate is a polite way of saying "go back to the store twice."
RootCalcs exists to replace the guesswork with real arithmetic. You put in exact numbers. You get an exact answer. You buy the right amount the first time.
The Math Is Documented
Every calculator page explains the formula it uses. You can read the derivation, verify the arithmetic, and cross-check the result with a pencil and paper. We don't publish a number and ask you to trust us.
When the formula has known caveats — like settling allowances or germination variability — we say so. Confident gardening comes from understanding the numbers, not just reading them.
Free to Use, Always
The calculators are free. No account required, no paywall, and results are never held hostage behind an email form. The site is plain, fast HTML — it works on a two-year-old phone in a garden with patchy signal.
RootCalcs is supported the way most independent garden sites are: we may recommend products we'd actually use (soil, beds, compost) through affiliate links, and the site may carry ads as it grows. Two things will never change: recommendations are earned, not paid placements, and the calculators themselves stay free and uncluttered.
Who We Are
RootCalcs is a small independent project built by gardeners who got tired of using spreadsheets and "rule of thumb" guides that produced inconsistent results. We write, calculate, and garden out of Georgia.
More calculators are being added. If there's a calculation you do every season and wish someone had already turned it into a clean tool — get in touch via the email list.
